Every Jewish Deli in the U.S. has a long and cherished history of serving corned beef and pastrami on rye, pickles and, of course the beverage of choice for more than a century, Dr. Brown’s sodas.
Dr. Brown’s dates all the way back to 1869 when as legend goes, it all started with one beverage- Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray soda. The original was said to have been developed by a doctor who treated some of New York’s immigrant children. He offered them the “appealing and healthy” Dr. Brown’s Celery Tonic Soda, which contained seltzer, celery seeds and sugar. It is not known if there ever really was a “Dr. Brown” connected with the drink, but what is known is that in the early 1930’s, pre-kosher Coca Cola, this became the drink of choice in the Jewish community.
Dr. Brown’s has evolved; it is now primarily manufactured in College Point, New York by Canada Dry/ Pepsi Bottling Company. Over the years, the brand has expanded its flavor varieties, which now include cream, black cherry, orange, ginger ale, root beer, and of course, the original Cel-Ray!
Dr. Brown’s is still the drink of choice in Jewish Deli’s across America – with cream and black cherry surpassing the popularity of the original Cel-Ray. Each of the six Dr. Brown's flavors is packaged with a nostalgic scene of old New York to emphasize the brand's origins.
Many families enjoy this drink on their Passover tables since it is certified kosher for Passover by the Kof–K.
