More than a decade ago, Keurig changed the world of coffee with its single serve coffee concept for use in the home or office. The company lives up to the American dream. The original K-Cup portion packs were invented by Colby College roommates Peter Dragone and John Sylvan, and Keurig was founded in 1990. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters invested in Keurig in 1996 and the very first Keurig brewer was launched in 1998. Keurig Green Mountain has been perking ever since!
Recently, we had the opportunity to try one of Keurig's newest innovations, a smaller machine, sleek and colorful on the counter since it is available in 12 luscious fashion color. We love its compact size, which makes it counter friendly in even the smallest of kitchens. It takes two minutes from filling to drinking and is easy to operate, just as prior models are. Simply add fresh water into the single-use reservoir, choose your favorite K-Cup®, add it to the holder, brew and enjoy.
So which K-Cups® are our favorites... We certainly know that this is a very personal choice. We like our coffee strong, rich, and full flavored. So, some of our favorites are:
Regular: Dark Magic, Italian Roast, French Roast (Darkest roast)
In Decaf (our after 5pm treat): Dark Magic, Italian Roast, Tully's French Roast
Keurig unflavored K Cups are all kosher, and many of the flavored coffees, teas and hot chocolates are kosher as well. Each K Cup is labeled with its kosher supervision mark. For more information visit keurig.com
The Keurig K10 MINI Plus Brewing System along with a selection of K-Cups are available online at keurig.com, or in stores such as Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Belk, Macy's and more – or visit keurig.com.Add a comment
What a difference a sharp edge and the correct size-cutting implement make in kitchen efficiency. We recently wrote about the WÜSTHOF Poultry and Kitchen Shears. . . and now we are taking a sharp turn and are on to knives.
After 18 years of using mostly the same meat knives, all stored in the same knife block, we knew that it was time to upgrade. Yes, as in most kosher kitchens, we have three sets of knives. In ours we have a colorful up-to-date dairy set (How we love our Kai Komachi); odds and ends for Passover; but confession here. . . our meat knife set is antique.
If you are thinking of purchasing a whole new set of knives, we suggest the 7-piece classic WÜSTHOF knife set for consideration. So handy! A knife for every kitchen task. We like the grip, the weight and the ease. We have been testing the 7-piece classic set, and it has made quite a difference in our prep, chopping and slicing time. An amazing difference!
7 Piece Classic Knife Set
When you treat yourself to new cooking tools. It's like a personal "kitchen shower". Yes, changing all of your knives at once, is an investment, but it will save you time, and if cared for, in the long term can be a money saver as well.
We learned that the WÜSTHOF Classic knife set has specially formulated high-carbon stain-free steel blades that hold a sharp edge. And the triple-riveted polyoxymethylene handles ensure a comfortable and steady grip. Each knife is precision forged from a single piece of sturdy high-carbon stain-free steel that resists stains and corrosion. Classic WÜSTHOF is formulated to last for years! And, by the way the kitchen shears are included in this set, as is the sharpening, honing steel. We like that!
• WÜSTHOF 's Precision Edge Technology (PEtec) is 20% sharper with twice the edge retention..
• Full tangs are triple riveted to the handles for exceptional durability and control.
• Durable polymer handles are contoured for a comfortable grip.
• High-carbon stain-free steel blades
• Hardwood block safely stores 13 items and is gentle on knives' edges.
• Includes: 3 1/2" paring knife, 6" utility knife, 8" chef's knife, 8" bread knife, 9" honing steel, Stainless-steel pull-apart shears, 13-slot hardwood storage block
NEW from WÜSTHOF
CLASSIC 7-inch Hollow Edge Chai Dao
If you just want to treat yourself (or a lucky cooking pal) to one knife, we suggest the new CLASSIC 7-inch Hollow Edge Chai Dao, a knife designed primarily for prepping vegetables.
Inspired by the traditional design of a Chinese Cleaver, WÜSTHOF's CLASSIC 7-inch Hollow Edge Chai Dao features a wide blade with a razor-sharp fine edge that curves upwards as it nears the knife's squared-off tip. The blade's curvy profile allows chefs and home cooks to quickly mince, chop, dice, and slice a myriad of ingredients by employing an effortless "rocking" motion on cutting boards. The knife's bevel-style hollow edge prevents potatoes, onions, and other sticky ingredients from adhering to the blade. (This is one of our favorite features!) We are often attempting to remove food stuck to our knives.
Also, the generous blade surface makes it easy to scrape and carry prepped ingredients from the chopping block to cook pans and bowls, and to smash and crush garlic, ginger and other aromatics. The ease of doing this made us feels like those TV chefs. And, yes, Dao has the power and heft to be able to easily transition from slicing vegetables to cubing tough cuts of beef.
$119.99 suggested retail.
The CLASSIC collection has been WÜSTHOF's best selling collection for generations, All WÜSTHOF knives are crafted in Solingen, Germany and are fully guaranteed against defects in craftsmanship.. They are sold in specialty and department stores in 90 countries around the world. The U.S. subsidiary, WÜSTHOF-TRIDENT OF AMERICA, INC. is located in Norwalk, Connecticut.
5 Rules for Knife Safety:
1 – Full Attention to the Blade! When working with a knife, give the job and knife 100% of your attention. Don't allow distractions! Eyes on the knife and the food!
2 – Sharp Knives are Safe Knives Always keep your knives sharp — dull knives require more force to cut and are more likely to slip. (OUCH!)
3 – Anatomy Off Limits! Don't check the sharpness of a knife with any of your body parts.
4 – Cut Away, Never Toward Always cut away from yourself whether using, sharpening or cleaning your knives.
5-No, No, No multi-tasking when using a knife

WÜSTHOF- A Cut Above
Treat yourself to these cutting edge culinary investments. We have recently been on a journey to upgrade some of our cutting implements. Blunt knives and old, no longer sharp--kitchen cutting implements are actually dangerous, and unfortunately we have come to this conclusion using many a Band-Aid. So, we are in the process of knife testing, perfect for this "cooking intensive" time of year. We know that the kosher home requires 3 of everything, which is often a costly proposition. We begin with shears, and present two we recommend:
WÜSTHOF Kitchen Shears
No kitchen, including ours, is complete without a pair of all-purpose shears. In fact, after using these WÜSTHOF tools, we recommend that if you don't yet have shears as part of your culinary cutting "wardrobe", do consider them. They will become essential in your kitchen. Shears are ideal for a multitude of tasks – from snipping twine, fresh herbs and flowers to slicing dried fruit, shaping parchment, cutting up salads, herbs, vegetables and fruits. We have used them to cut parchment for baking, for trimming pastry and to open soft plastic containers.
• Durable stainless-steel shears
• Slip-resistant polypropylene handles allow for a steady grip
• Steel-tooth insets in handle has a built-in bottle opener to twist open bottle and jar caps
• Blades come a part for easy cleaning
• Can be held with either right or left hand
WÜSTHOF 10"Poultry Shears
These WÜSTHOF poultry shears are a cutting dream. They allow us to easily make our own cut up chicken, and are quite helpful when cutting a turkey or even trimming fat from meats. We can buy a whole chuck roast and easily chunk it ourselves for cholent or stew. These 10" shears cut right through poultry ribs, bone and gristle. Equipped with stainless-steel serrated blades, their sharp edge cut easily through meat, cartilage and bones without tearing the meat itself. The notched edge blade can even be used for cutting through and cracking bones while leaving the meat intact.
• Durable textured stainless-steel handles provide a steady grip Stainless steel serrated blades
• Saves time and energy with efficient cuts
• Ambidextrous design - suitable for left- or right-handed users
• Lock closed for safe, compact storage.
Bye Bye Chip Clips – Hello FreshTape!
We discovered this innovation at the AmericasMart summer gift and gourmet show. What a great idea. Simply fold over the bag, use this tape to seal the bag.

• Available in several fun designs
• Recyclable and reusable
About the FreshTape founders;
Liz and Laura have been BFFs since they worked together in rock and roll radio in Chicago (The Loop). They've gotten married (several times, truthfully) raised kids, travelled, run households, helped parents and have led very full, very messy lives. Like yours.
They got tired of using lame bag clips that held sticky germs and were the wrong size. They were tired of throwing away food that got stale or freezer burned. And they didn't have the time to rearrange everything in happy little containers, either.
There had to be a better way. So they invented one. Made in America. Recyclable. BPA and Phthalate free. And it really works. Really.

Helen Chen's Asian Kitchen
Sushi Making Kit
Helen Chen's easy to use Asian Kitchen Sushi Making kit takes the fear out of making sushi rolls. You can now consider sushi a family activity – yes, even the children can roll.
Sushi rolls combine vinegar-seasoned rice with raw, smoked or cooked fish, cooked or fresh vegetables, and pickles into a myriad of shapes and sizes. It has made its way onto most American and International restaurants, and now it can easily be prepared at home.
One of the most popular types of sushi is rolled sushi (maki-zushi) made with seasoned sushi rice and a filling and wrapped in a seaweed sheet (nori). It's shaped into rolls, cut into bite-sized pieces and served with Japanese horseradish (wasabi), pickled ginger (gari) and dipped in soy sauce. It is fun to make, delicious, and can be made with a wide variety of fillings. We often serve it as an appetizer on Shabbos!
Suggested fillings to use in your rolled sushi:
• Asparagus (parboiled)
• Carrots (parboiled and cut into thin strips)
• Green beans (parboiled)
• Spinach (parboiled, water squeezed out)
• Cucumber (seedless is best)
• Japanese pickled vegetables
• Takuwan (pickled daikon radish)
• Abura-age (tofu, sliced thin, seasoned and fried)
• Pickled ginger
• Egg Omelet
• Tuna (sushi-quality raw tuna)
• Smoked salmon or other smoked fish
• Kosher Surimi (crabsticks)
• Sesame seeds (black or white)
Watch this Video and get inspired: Helen Chen demonstrates how to make sushi rolls with her sushi making kit from HIC Harold Import Co.
Helen Chen's Asian Kitchen Sushi Making Kit contains three different sized sushi shape molds, a spatula, a slotted rice paddle, and an instruction booklet. You will need Nori sheets (Emerald Cove brand is kosher) and of course your choice of fillings. Some of our favorite fillings are faux crab, avocado, scallions, and cucumbers. Simply follow the directions in the kit – press, roll and release! You will be a sushi maven in no time! To purchase the kit, click here: Helen Chen's Asian Kitchen Sushi Making Kit.
