Pereg Gourmet, a family business established in 1906, offers a wide array of convenient products such as seasonings, spices and flavored bread crumbs, rice and couscous ancient grains and quinoa products. We had never tried Farro – so we were delighted with the opportunity to taste Pereg Gourmet Farro with Garden Vegetables. It is a convenient mix…ready to prepare on the stovetop. We simply added water and let it “cook” for about 20 minutes to reach the “al dente” stage. The mix is pre-seasoned. What a filling and delicious side dish. We enjoyed it warm, but it was also good at room temperature. Farro is one of those ancient grains that is just coming to the culinary forefront- - not too far behind quinoa. It is a good substitute and change-up for rice and pasta…and a nutritious source of fiber, protein and iron.
Pereg offers Farro plain, and in 3 additional “just add water flavors…. We are looking forward to trying the mushroom and rosemary blend.

Farro is a food composed of the grains of wheat species. It is sold dried and is prepared by cooking in water until soft, but still crunchy (many recommend that prior to cooking, whole grain farro should be soaked overnight). There are actually several types of farro – which require different cooking times. It may be eaten plain, and it is savored as an ingredient in dishes such as salads and soups. Farro has been found in the tombs of Egyptian kings and is said to have fed the Roman Legions. Italians have dined on farro for centuries. Now, with the revival of interest in whole grains, farro's popularity is gaining in the U.S. as well.

A Charleston, South Carolina Specialty
We've got the people of Charleston on our mind this week. We are touched, comforted and encouraged by their unity and shared sense of loss, a lesson for the world and the country. To celebrate thie beautiful city of Charleston, one of our favorite destinations in the U.S., we are sharing a favorite product and some recipes.
We consider Carolina Plantation Stone Ground Grits the Rolex of grits. These grits are coarse-ground the old fashioned way, processed between the granite stones of an antique Meadows gristmill. Chefs in several upscale Southern restaurants serve Carolina Plantation Grits on their menus, and we serve these at home. The grits have a rich taste and a thick, creamy texture. The longer they cook, the creamier they get. Top them with grated cheddar cheese, or just plain butter...delicious!

Whoopie Pies by The Piping Gourmets
The Piping Gourmets was launched in October 2011 by co-founders Leslie Kaplan and Carolyn Shulevitz. The pair created Whoopie Pies, a line of all natural and certified gluten free desserts. The mission - to offer a variety of innovative, delicious, healthier desserts for today's health and taste conscious consumers. Both founders are well seasoned in the food world with experience in both catering and hospitality. Carolyn Broome Shulevitz is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. So what is a Whoopie Pie? It has been called a cupcake sandwich. Legend has it that these delicacies actually originated in the Amish country. When Amish farmers found the confection in their lunchboxes, they shouted WHOOPEE! And you will too when you taste these. Fleishmann's Simply Homemade Baking Mixes
One day recently when walking the food aisles of Wal-Mart we spotted a new Fleishmann's box on the baking aisle - and the box had a big OU right on the front. What a delicious find this turned out to be. We had discovered Fleishmann's new parve and kosher baking mixes.
We found 3 varieties Cornbread, Pretzel Creations and Country White.
Of course, those of you who know that we live in Atlanta can understand which we chose for our first test pick! Yes, we chose the cornbread - our favorite of course – maybe because we live in the south, or maybe because we love corn. Our results; to our delight, this was as good as homemade from scratch, but much faster. We followed the basic recipe directions. It took 10 minutes and one bowl to mix the batter by hand, and 30 minutes to bake. Delicious!
The cornbread mix is:
- OU Kosher, parve
- Dairy Free, Trans–fat free
- 10 servings per box (box says 16- but not in our house!)
- Made with real corn
On our 2nd try, we proceeded with some of the add-ins suggested on the box – we added canned corn and jalapeños (directions on the label). Results, even more scrumptious with this extra touch, and layers of spicy flavor.
And next - we are intrigued by a video recipe (see below) - combining Simply Homemade Cornbread Mix with diced apricots and mascarpone cheese. Of course, we love sweet and plan to top this with a dollop of honey or blueberry preserves. Results forthcoming.
