Passionate_Vegetable_cookbook

By Suzanne Landry, Health Inspired Publishing

The Passionate Vegetable, health inspired recipes to revitalize your life, offers dishes for vegans, vegetarians and meat lovers. Written by Suzanne Landry, popularly known as the fresh food chef, the book shares the author's love of fresh harvest-to-table vegetables which she presents in easy to prepare, healthful and flavorful recipes. Landry believes that vegetables, though used frequently as side dishes, should move to a starring role on the plate.

This need and principle is rooted deeply in advice from her father who battled cancer for 17 years: "Without good health nothing else in life matters." According to Suzanne, "My father believed that without good health nothing else in life mattered.  His death, along with my own health challenges and those of my children were the catalyst for my journey to explore the connection between food and healing. I know with absolute certainty that changing our diets from high animal protein to one high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can improve our health."

Having taught natural foods cooking classes for over 30 years, and focused on food and healthy eating, Suzanne believes in encouraging and educating people to eat less meat protein, and to eat more vegetables, fruit, high fiber, whole grains and beans. The first three chapters of the book are devoted to nutrition and how to create a healthier kitchen, including tips on pantry makeovers, kitchen tools, how to choose and cook food, and basic knife techniques.

The Passionate Vegetable demonstrates that there are many ways to deliciously use vegetables in meals including breakfasts, salads, sides, and entrees. In addition, there are chapters on meat, meat alternatives and "good for you" desserts. Along with the recipes are gorgeous photos, and "bits of insight" providing tips, history, fun and helpful information about the ingredients. This cookbook provides the reader with healthful, creative cooking techniques and recipes, but makes eating vegetables a passionate pursuit!

The Life-Transforming Diet
By Davud H. Zulberg, Feldheim Publishers

LifeTransformingDiet

This book, The Life-Transforming Diet, focuses on the health and nutritional principles of Maimonides, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (1135/1138 to 1204), universally known as The Rambam, who is considered one of the greatest ancient physicians and philosophers in Jewish history. Over 800 years ago, the Rambam wrote: "Whoever conducts himself in the ways we have set forth, I will guarantee that he will not get sick throughout his life.... He will not need a doctor and his body will be in perfect shape and remain healthy all his life." (Mishneh Torah, Hilchot De'ot 4:20.)

Zulberg explains that many contemporary nutrition and eating issues were actually addressed by the Rambam. Experts hold that The Rambam's writings on health and the prevention of disease remain relevant today, including basic advice on what to eat, when to eat, how to eat, and the importance of exercise. He encourages food awareness, and the gradual creation of healthy eating habits.

David Zulberg, spent seven years studying in Israel and holds a Masters from Columbia University, is an ACE certified Fitness specialist and certified Health Coach. Zulberg is considered one of the foremost experts in Maimonides' medical works. His book, 'The Life Transforming Diet', is currently in its sixth printing.

As a result of the book's success, Zulberg further pursued his interest in herbal remedies based on the Rambam's writings. He consulted with expert herbalists and naturalists globally, including experts in India and China, launching a company, Bio Herbal Tech, focused on providing life changing nutritional supplements.

By Todd Gray and Ellen Kassoff Gray
with David Hagedorn - St. Martin's Press

New_Jewish_Table_Cookbook-e

The New Jewish Table is by husband and wife team Todd Gray and Ellen Kassoff Gray. This talented pair impart their love of using fresh ingredients in contemporary Jewish cooking.

This book explores the melding of two cooking cultures, seasonal American with Eastern-European Jewish. Since 1999 Todd Gray, the owner/chef of the Equinox Restaurant in Washington, D.C., has combined his love for farm-to-table ingredients with his passion for Jewish cuisine.

Now with the publication of this cookbook, the kosher eater can try some of his acclaimed recipes. The book features more than 125 recipes, many from the restaurant, along with anecdotes, tips and reinterpretations of traditional Jewish family favorites. Both Ellen and Todd share family histories, personal memories and food thoughts throughout. We had an opportunity to try several of the recipes, and loved each one we prepared. The full color photographs are beautiful, and certainly add to the book's appeal.

In addition to the fresh, innovative recipes, we especially like the Chef's Appendix included in the book – offering how to’s for many cooking basics. It is a primer for basic cooking techniques – a chef’s “must knows and good to know” -- This section alone is worth buying the book, or if you are lucky, winning it.

KosherEye Notes: Although some of the recipes have meat/parve conversion notes, we did spot a few that need a bit more ingredient tweaking or substitution for the observant kosher household. Nonetheless, this book is highly recommended--A gift yourself, gift others KosherEye selection.

Try these recipes from The New Jewish Table:
Annie’s Fried Chicken
Roast Potatoes with Rosemary
Eggplant Caviar with Pita Chips

Smitten_Kitchen_CookbookThe Smitten Kitchen Cookbook
Deb Perelman
Recipes and Wisdom from an Obsessive Home Cook
Alfred A Knopf Publisher

If you have never visited the award-winning popular online blog smittenkitchen.com, you are missing one of the most informative and entertaining food blogs on the Internet. And now, Deb Perelman, a self-taught home cook and photographer has written her first cookbook.

Originating in her tiny New York City kitchen, the book offers 100 + recipes and 300 full color photos. In The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, Deb delightfully shares her recipes, tips, anecdotes, stories and friendly advice. She believes that there are "no bad cooks, just bad recipes", and that "cooking should be a pleasure ...and the results delicious". The book offers much new material (85%) and along with a few recipes (15%) adapted from blog favorites. Primarily vegetarian, some recipes do contain meat and fish. All can be made kosher friendly. As Deb herself explains she is somewhat of a picky eater--not really a fish fan, dislikes cold soups, and went through a vegetarian phase as well!

She relates to her readers in a warm, approachable way – as a mentor, doing her best to take the apprehension and fear out of trying to cook a new dish, or tackling a new recipe. And speaking of her recipes, most in the book are created with easy to find, budget friendly ingredients.

What do the critics say?
From Booklist
"Wildly popular food blogger and self-proclaimed 'obsessive' self-taught cook and photographer [Deb] Perelman's exhaustive research in her tiny NYC kitchen yields some—lucky for us! —spectacular results in beautiful full color."

Publisher's Weekly "This fearless home cook's humorous anecdotes and delectable photos make for a food blog–gone–book that translates beautifully into any kitchen and fulfills Perelman's promise to help cooks prepare food that both 'she and you will love."

KosherEye cheers Deb's creativity, talent and obsessive desire to cook and share. Her warmth, sincerity, humor and down to earth attitude make this cookbook great fun to read, and to use. By the time you cook your way through– you and Deb will be best "buds"! You will get to know her son Jacob, her husband Alex and feel welcome in her kitchen. At least that's how we feel.

KosherEye Notes: Although there are a few recipes which include non -kosher ingredients, Deb suggests that these ingredients (i.e. bacon or pancetta), which add a crispy/salty accent, can be omitted, and the dish will still remain "balanced and excellent."

Enjoy Deb's recipes for Zucchini Ribbons with Almond Pesto and Flat Roasted Chicken with Tiny Potatoes.
